BTRDA Round 10, Alwoodley MC, Saturday 25th July 2010

Organisers: Alwoodley MC

Where: Sherburn Proving Ground, Nr York

Championships: MSA, BTRDA, ANCC

Alwoodley MC and the oprganising team deserve praise for their perseverance to put the event on. They only received the OK to use the event two weeks before and put together a fun event on the perimeter road of the Sherburn Proving Ground. The tests were well laid out to miss any broken asphalt and the surface was well brushed, however it was very slippery for the first round of tests.

The story of this event must be the number of breakages. By the end of two rounds Dave Sowman had retired after a broken rose joint led to a damaged brake pipe. Howard Everingham had the splines on his steering column fail so he was also out. Alastair Moffatt noticed that a CV joint was noisey on test 4 so he replaced it as a precaution. It had a broken ball and was unlikely to have lasted another test. Richard Pinkney was less fortunate on test 9 when his gearbox failed, resulting in a maximum. The maximum and a later penalty were all that separated the top two at the end.

Steve Morten had problems with his brakes, in particular his hydraulic handbrake. Pumping the brakes to maintain pressure on autotests is not easy and he did well to finish 5th overall. Another lucky driver was Ian Chapman who completed all his tests to finish third overall. Son Chris following on his last test had the lower rear wishbone of the Striker fracture and had to stop on the test to minimise damage. Mike Sones enjoyed his day. After a frustrating season in 2009 he now has the Mini Special sorted and can concentrate on his driving. He has lost none of his skill which gave him the MSA Championship in the 90s. Mike traded times with Duncan Wild in the ABS but Duncan was suffering from a handling problem in the morning, cured by adjusting the tow in. He then suffered brain fade on test 11 and a major overshoot on test 13 to ruin his chance of a top finish.

Brian Sharp lost first gear on test 9 but continued using second and reverse. While he dropped time, he did enough to win the road going class. Lee Valentine was top saloon with a top ten finish.

This win was enough to put Alastair in an unassailable position in the Championship subject to final auditing
